Der im Saarland geborene Maler Max Neumann (*1949) z\u00e4hlt zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der deutschen figurativen Gegenwartskunst. Mit seinen oft r\u00e4tselhaften Figurationen in entr\u00fcckten Bildszenerien, und den geheimnisvollen dunklen Portr\u00e4ts zielt er nicht auf das subjektive Abbild eines Individuums, sondern auf die Kristallisation des unverwechselbaren Sinnbildes des Menschen. Seine Charaktere zeigen sich in ihren zugleich beunruhigenden wie auch anmutigen Silhouetten, vielleicht wenngleich nicht schl\u00fcssig von Zeit und Geschichte befreit, als symbolhafte Tr\u00e4ger menschlicher Zust\u00e4nde, \u00c4ngste und Obsessionen. Neumann erz\u00e4hlt keine Geschehnisse, sondern zeichnet emotionale Zust\u00e4nde nach, wobei dem Betrachter ein Spiegel der eigenen Tr\u00e4ume und \u00c4ngste, Obsessionen und Phantasmen vor Augen gehalten wird. Auch der formale Aspekt ist dabei von gro\u00dfer Bedeutung, so sind die Bildelemente in der Fl\u00e4che perfekt austariert und lassen in ihrer Bildsprache klare grafische, manches Mal sogar kalligrafische Z\u00fcge, entdecken, die ein konstruiertes \u00dcbereinander an Wirklichkeitsebenen und die atmosph\u00e4rische Schattenornamentik beg\u00fcnstigen.\u00a0<\/p>

Seit den sp\u00e4ten 1970er Jahren hatte der K\u00fcnstler international \u00fcber 150 Einzelausstellungen. Zu den Ausstellern seiner Werke z\u00e4hlen unter anderem das Museum Folkwang in Essen, das Saarlandmuseum Saarbr\u00fccken, das Centre d\u2019Art Plastiques in Royan, der Espace d\u2019Art Contemporain Andr\u00e9 Malraux in Colmar, die Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York, die Galerie Vidal-Saint Phalle in Paris, die Galerie Stefan R\u00f6pke in K\u00f6ln, die Galerie Pascal Polar in Br\u00fcssel, Mimmo Scognamiglio Arte Contemporanea in Mailand, die Galer\u00eda Arn\u00e9s y R\u00f6pke in Madrid, die LEVY Galerie und die Galerie Georg Nothelfer in Berlin, und die Satani Gallery in Tokio.<\/p>

The painter Max Neumann (*1949) is one of the most important representatives of German painterly figuration. His enigmatic human figures seated in enraptured pictorial settings are not geared towards capturing a subjective, distinct portrayal; rather they gesture towards the crystallization of a complex allegory regarding human fears, dreams and obsessions. His characters, in their at once disconcerting and graceful silhouettes, fall out of time and history being markers of a human state of mind. Neumann does not intend to narrate any incidents; he rather traces emotional human qualities confronting the viewer with his own desires, fears, obsessions and phantasms. The formal composition of his paintings is important, keeping all pictorial elements perfectly balanced, following a visual language that conveys clear graphic and partly calligraphic features, bringing forward an overlay of reality spheres and an evocative ornamentation of the shadows.\u00a0<\/p>

Since the late 1970s the artist has had more than 150 solo exhibitions internationally. Among them are The Museum Folkwang, Essen; Saarlandmuseum Saarbruck; the Centre d\u2019Art Plastiques, Royan; Espace d\u2019Art Contemporain Andr\u00e9 Malraux, Colmar; Bruce Silverstein Gallery in New York, Gallery Vidal-Saint Phalle, Paris; Gallery Stefan R\u00f6pke, Cologne; Gallery Pascal Polar, Brussels; Mimmo Scognamiglio Arte Contemporanea, Milan; Galer\u00eda Arn\u00e9s y R\u00f6pke, Madrid; Gallery Georg Nothelfer, Berlin, LEVY Galerie, Berlin and Satani Gallery, Tokyo.<\/p>

His works are in numerous public and private collections such as the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; The Museum Folkwag, Essen; Museo de Bellas Artes, Oviedo; Hamburger Kunsthalle; Fondation Maeght, St. Paul de Vence; and the Seibu Museum, Tokyo. Max Neumann lives and works in Berlin.<\/p>
